Early Detection Changes Everything: Free Language Screenings for Children in Our Community

At Thrive Speech Services, our mission is simple — to help children find their voice, build confidence, and thrive in every environment. Starting this year, we’re proud to offer free community language screenings on select weekends at local community centers and family spaces throughout San Diego.

These brief, play-based screenings are designed to help parents understand whether their child’s speech and language development is on track — and if not, what steps can make a meaningful difference.

What Is a Language Screening?

A language screening is a short, informal assessment that gives a quick snapshot of how a child:

  • Understands and follows directions

  • Uses words and sentences to express themselves

  • Engages socially and communicates with others

The screening usually takes about 10–15 minutes and feels more like a fun activity than a test. Parents receive immediate feedback, along with individualized recommendations or strategies to support language growth at home.

Why Early Detection Matters

Children develop communication skills rapidly in the first five years of life. When a delay or disorder goes unnoticed, it can later affect:

  • Reading and academic readiness

  • Social interaction and confidence

  • Long-term learning outcomes

The good news? Speech and language therapy is most effective when started early. Early intervention can improve vocabulary, sentence structure, and social communication — setting the foundation for lifelong learning and self-expression.

Our goal is to make early language support accessible and stigma-free. By bringing screenings into community spaces — like recreation centers, libraries, and neighborhood events — families can learn more about their child’s development in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
